Pictou MLAs Support Investments in Sports and Recreation

(Pictou, NS) - NDP MLAs Charlie Parker, Clarrie MacKinnon and Ross Landry are pleased with the announcement of provincial funding to develop playgrounds and upgrade facilities in their area.

In Pictou West, Pictou Elementary School will receive $10,000 to develop their playground.

"It's important for children to have a safe place to play," said Parker. "This funding will allow students to stay active when they have a break from class."

Clarrie MacKinnon believes the $6,000 grant for upgrades the Westville Curling Club will make it even more popular in the community.

"Sport is an important part of Nova Scotia culture," said MacKinnon. "The curling club's renovations and upgrade will enhance a facility that is already an important part of our community."

The Westside Community Centre will receive $20,000 for renovations. "This centre offers programs for young and young-at-heart," added Landry. "Fixing it up will ensure it is here for us for years to come."

The funding was announced as part of government's Recreation Facility Development Program. The program assists community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation.
