Marilyn More became the MLA for Dartmouth South-Portland Valley in August 2003. She was re-elected in 2006, and in 2009 she was sworn in as the Minister of Education and Minister of Labour and Workforce Development.

Marilyn brings much experience in community development, volunteer supports and seniors' issues through her leadership in Community Links, the Rural Volunteers Project and the NS Falls Prevention Initiative. Marilyn was also active in the healthy communities movement and was chosen one of the first community members to join federal and provincial officials on the NS Rural Team.

Marilyn has served as the NDP Caucus Chair and Chair of the all-party Legislative Standing Committee on Community Services. She was also member of the Public Accounts and Economic Development Standing Committees and was the first female Party Whip in NS during her 2006-07 appointment by Darrell Dexter. 

Marilyn's involvement in Dartmouth organizations and community life started as a young child. She continues to volunteer her time with the Dartmouth Heritage Museum Society, Dartmouth Historical Association, Dartmouth Harbourfront Trails Association and the Public Good Society of Dartmouth. The first woman elected to a school board in NS (1978), she served as Chair of the Dartmouth District School Board for a number of years. A former junior high teacher, she maintains her strong interest in public education. 

 Her community and political focus continues to support education and youth, help seniors and persons with disabilities, reduce poverty and inequities, protect our environment and heritage and strengthen the voluntary sector.

 Marilyn has also been very involved with the New Democratic Party at all levels of operation and was twice elected President of the NS NDP. 

 The mother of two adult sons and proud grandmother of two, Marilyn has a strong sense of family and community. She practises commitment and caring for people of all ages and interests in every aspect of her work. She understands the issues facing today's families in all their different shapes and sizes.
